Dosage
○ Torsades de Pointes Treatment
Administer 8 mmol of magnesium (1.6 g of magnesium chloride) slowly as an intravenous (IV) bolus injection. Then, continue the infusion with magnesium at a rate of 0.012 to 0.08 mmol per minute (2.5 to 16.5 mg of magnesium chloride per minute).
○ Treatment of Acute Hypokalemia Accompanied by Hypomagnesemia
Administer 24 to 32 mmol of magnesium (5 to 6.5 g of magnesium chloride) as an intravenous drip infusion over 24 hours, along with potassium supplementation (potassium should be prepared in a separate container from this solution). Discontinue the treatment once magnesium levels return to normal.
○ Magnesium Supplementation in Case of Electrolyte Imbalance and During Parenteral Nutrition
Administer 6 to 8 mmol of magnesium (1.2 to 1.6 g of magnesium chloride) as an intravenous drip infusion over 24 hours.
For children, the typical dosage is 0.1 to 0.3 mmol of magnesium per kg (20 to 60 mg of magnesium chloride per kg) administered over 24 hours.
○ Prevention and Treatment of Preeclampsia (Toxemia of Pregnancy)
Administer slowly as an intravenous infusion.
If preeclampsia occurs or to prevent its occurrence, administer 16 mmol of magnesium (3.25 g of magnesium chloride) as an intravenous drip infusion over 20 to 30 minutes.
If preeclampsia persists, during the first hour of treatment, administer an additional 16 mmol of magnesium (3.25 g of magnesium chloride) as an intravenous drip infusion, ensuring that the total cumulative dose does not exceed 32 mmol of magnesium (6.5 g of magnesium chloride).
During the subsequent 24 hours, continue the intravenous drip infusion at a rate of 8 to 12 mmol of magnesium (1.5 to 2.0 g of magnesium chloride) per hour.
○ For Typical Adults,
To avoid life-threatening hypermagnesemia, the rate of the intravenous drip infusion should never exceed 120 mg (0.6 mmol) of magnesium per minute.
